CBT for Weight Management

When working with clients who want a healthier relationship with food, Dr. Zweig and her team incorporate a non-diet, body-accepting approach. We teach clients cognitive, behavioral, acceptance, and emotion regulation techniques for long-lasting improvements in their mental and physical health. Clients learn the necessary skills to reduce emotional eating, prevent binges, learn intuitive eating, increase physical activity, sustain motivation, challenge self-sabotaging thoughts, and cope better with cravings. Like all cognitive-behavioral therapy, this treatment draws on empirically-supported interventions and will be tailored to meet your individual needs.

How CBT Can Help

Cognitive behavioral therapy can help you recognize the thought, behavioral, and emotional patterns that contribute to distress around food and eating. Depending on your goals, treatment may focus on:

  • Emotional eating: Understanding the role of stress, boredom, anxiety, and other emotions in eating patterns, and developing alternative coping strategies.

  • Cravings and urges: Learning to respond to cravings with greater awareness and flexibility rather than feeling controlled by them.

  • All-or-nothing thinking: Challenging rigid rules about foods and the belief that one choice can make an entire day a success or failure.

  • Motivation and lasting change: Identifying realistic goals, working through obstacles, and building healthy, sustainable habits that fit your life.

  • A healthier relationship with food: Developing greater flexibility around eating and reducing the guilt and self-criticism that can accompany food choices. Learning to indulge with intention and in moderation so food can be social and enjoyable.

An Individualized, Non-Diet Approach

There is no single approach that works for everyone. We work collaboratively with you to understand your concerns, identify the patterns that are keeping you stuck, and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Our goal is to help you build a more balanced relationship with food and your body, with an emphasis on psychological well-being, flexibility, and meaningful changes that support your life beyond the number on a scale.

Is Therapy for Weight Management Right for You?

You may benefit from this approach if you want to change patterns of emotional eating, feel less preoccupied with food, move away from rigid dieting, or develop healthier and more sustainable habits.

If you’re experiencing binge eating or other eating disorder symptoms, we can discuss whether specialized eating disorder treatment may be a better fit for your needs.
